hey everyone One of the lfs I frequent has gars around 8" long for $14.00 my question s I know nothing about the species and I was wondering what these gars are most likely to be for this price. They are "true" gars not needle nose. I was hoping shortnose nut I don't know Maybe florida gars? Also they have fish lice and I was wondering how hard this is to cure in a hospital tank. thanks

true gars even the smallest of the true gars ( shortnose)will need a tank thats 30-36 inches wide.Even at 8" you will be looking at a tank width of 18'' and that may only be big enough for a year-Anne

fish lice are not that hard to take care of

First off let me say thank you for responding so that this doesn't come out harsh but I'm not asking about the tank size, that has been pounded into everyone on this site I was justing wondering what type of gar it would most likely be priced at $14.00. thanks again

I have seen floridas and spotteds going at about that price @ 6-8".
I have been lucky in regards to fish lice, I have had one fish that had two lice (argulus) that I picked off with tweezers during quarantine. They are tough little pests but I have heard that there are several praziquantel based products that kill them.
The most interesting cure for infested fish that I have read about is simple heat. Most argulus sp. apparently die off at around 86 degrees F. so they reccomend slowly raising your tank temp to between 88-90 degrees and adding some surface flow, leave the temp at that level for at least ten days, the articles said that this treatment might need to be repeated after a week. They also advise physically removing all that you can, pull them off like you would a tick, no twisting motion, just a firm, steady, straight pull. A dab of iodine one the wound does not hurt either.
