how big are all the fish and the tank? what species of gar are you talking about?

no to the silver dollars and flagtail for sure. people will say they've successfully done aro w gar but imo it's not a good combo.

Why not because of they say "silvery" color?

it's a 180G. i believe it is a spotted gar. why no to silver dollars and flagtail?

More likely you have a florida gar as spotted gars are not yet available in the Philippines and they mislabel all florida gars as spotted gars. This is not in the Philippines but most Asian countries especially those who captive breeds them.

that statement is true for the silver dollars, which will probably be murdered by the gar. however, in the case of the 2 other groups of fishes, that would be the less pressing matter. flagtails are notorious for feeding on other fishes slime and would pose a threat to the gar. silver aros are even more aggressive than pbass in my experience, and have a history of causing a good number of broken backs in gars. just do a search on the forums and you'll find that to be true.

I was gonna say about that with the silver aro harassing gars and the silver dollar twitchy fast movement which will give a flash of shine to the gar and will try to investigate by snapping at them.

@peewee
Make sure that he got a mellow silver as for the flagtail it's also a 50-50 as some are notorious some aren't. I used to kept 3x 8-10" in my tank with gars and bichirs and they did never bothered them. However you just need to watch out.

ok guys, thanks for the advice! still got a spare tank in case anything happens.

i have my 12" with a silver aro. my aro is very mellow though. he doesn't care about the gar even when the gar swims around at the surface. oh, and the aro is 22"
