i have a florida/spotted gar that's 12". I'm going to change my gravel to black. What kind of plant setup can i add to make it look really nice? Pictures would help as well thanks

try floating plants. if you want planted, plants that aren't too bushy are best. gars like swimming/lazing through plants, so ensure that there's plenty of space in the plants itself for them.

there are plenty of gar pics over the net, but here's a stcky in this thread you might wanna check out.

you might also want to note that gars need lots of swimming space, so ensure that your plants do not take up so much space that the fish is cramped.

Thanks i think im going to make an algae background, will this affect any of my fishes?

It will not affect anything.. This is pretty much my preferred background.

Spotteds and Florida actually are pretty fond of thick vegetation so thick clumping of various stemmed plants and floating plants does not hurt. I tend to also add a lot of branches, oak leaves and woody debris to the tank. This adds structure and interest both to the fish and the fishes owner....
