Hey everyone
I am new to gars never kept any before...i have a tank which is 5ft in length and 1.5 ft in width...i have only one small baby silver aro in it about 5 inchs...i want to add 2 small gars in it roughly about the same size...should i take this step? can they both (silver aro and gar) live together for life without fighting ?plus i would be soon upgrading my tank as soon as the fish grows a little.. Thanks in advance :)

Gars and arowanas rarely get along long-term; it is recommended that gars not be kept with silvery fishes.

I had three gars in a tank with my silver aro, there was only one gar that didn't like my aro, actually bit its tail off, got rid of him right after that, but I have 2 in there still and they've all been in there for the last year. Just keep them all well fed.

Thanks mate :)

I also am in the same position, I have one 5" Florida gar and I want to ad another predatory fish. This gar is quite mellow and has shared the tank with a very aggressive walking catfish. We could get either an oscar (very small) another gar (if we can find one :nilly:) or a 4" very small silver arowana fry.

i have seen many successful tanks with both aro and gar, it's just the individual fish. every fish has a different personality.

tbh an aro fry probably wouldn't do the best in there, if any aro i'd say 6" plus when they can better fend for themselves. as fry they do best alone.

first a 6" aro is still a fry.

i wouldn't mix them till the aro was atleast 10" with the gar being 5". if an aro get to much tail damage it will 99.9% of the time die. that being said gars love to nip tails of aros and other fish. i have noticed that my gars are alot calmer since i have seperated my silver aros from them, although while together my gars and aros got along just fine(shortnose and floridas). i did not how ever try my longnose with my aros for several reasons ex., thin and easy to break there backs, aros stealing food and breaking their long skinny jaws, very large catfish with the aros putting more of a food stealing risk to them.

it is a risk, but it can be done.

Added a 6-7 Aro to my 5 inch Gar yesterday.... My gar is very very lazy and has done nothing but cruse around the bottom since the Aro was introduced. I will separate the Fish however if there is any hint of fighting. The Gar stays around the bottom while the aro stays on the top is this normal? how should I help the aro acclimate.

Sorry for the double post, Will a 3'5" by 1'5" by 2' be large enough to house both fishes for the next 6 months comfortably?
edit 75 gallon...
