It seems as though this happened over night last week.
Tha Gars tail was always slightly torn since I bought it, but now, all of a sudden, half his tail has dissappeared and the ragged edges of it has lost colour. I have added some medicine in, and since then it hasn't gotten any worse - but not any better either. Is it too late? I may post some images later.

Thanks,

Gars do not tolerate medicine. Best response would have been to add salt and up the heat. What are the tankmates? As above will need pics.

Sounds like another fish bit the tail fin off.

without pics we can't appropriately diagnose the situation. for now bump the temp to 82F, add 1 tbsp salt per 20g of water, and do water changes every other day 50%. you should see improvements unless it is a very aggressive bacterial infection. don't use other meds until it's been properly diagnosed--

you have to remember tank mates as well cause usually some of the fish will attack the weakest fish and right now it could be the gar.

If the tail has always been tore up and has been having problems healing chances are it being a bacterial infection. I dont think meds are the way to go in this case unless it was a mild does of melafix.
Pics would really help. So will salt and heat.

Does it have to be aquarium salt?
