Hey i was wondering what can live with my little gar, im pretty sure he is a florida gar, not entirely sure but will upload a picture soon. I was thinking about getting an arowana, heard mixed reviews from recent threads and other sites.He is currently 5" and is the only one in the tank. If anyone has any ideas about what fish can live with the gar im open for suggestions!

* 5 inches not feet.

It's a 30 gallon for now and yes I know it's small but he seems very happy right
Now, when he gets a little bigger I'll upgrade to a 125 gallon. I'm only going to keep 2 more fish in there perhaps an arowana or pike. Thoughts?

Gar normally don't mess with other fish. I'd keep him with fish the same size or bigger. Something that he will not eat.
Cichlids, ghost knife, other species of characins, etc...

The 30 gallon would be fine for now. You don't want to go too big with a juvenile gar. Just ensure you have larger accomodations as the gar grows. A tank that is two feet wide should be considered the minimum for an adult florida gar.

As far as tankmates you want to avoid anything that will pick on or outcompete the gar as well as silvery fish. Most cichlids, many characins, silver arowanas and catfish are not advised for this reason. Bichirs, african arowanas, sa lungfish, other gars are some of the tankmates that tend to be recomended. I have had good experience with doradid catfish. Just be sure the research the individual fishes needs.

Here is a thread that goes over some members tankmate experience, http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=392233

x2.

Skip the 125 gallon aquarium and get yourself a 180 gallon aquarium instead to save some money in the long run because it will need at least a 180 gallon aquarium when it reaches its full size.

Great advise guys thank you very much, how long should I wait to upgrade? In other words how big should my gar get until I upgrade to a 125 or 180 gallon tank?

Not sure off the top of my head I'm pretty sure it's 36 x 12 x 16.
