what the smallest (true) american gar? from record books it seems like the short-nose at 5 lbs or the spotted from other threads on this site.

what size tank would it require? is a standard 75 ok?

and i was looking for a substrate that is solid and smooth, like the fake stone they use for stepping stones in gardens and such, would this work or is gravel the better way to go?

also, is it better to fill the tank 1/2, 2/3, 3/4. or all the way full?

thanx in advance..

I do not know much about gars but I do not think there is one gar out there that would live in a 75 gallon tank, from what I have seen it is hard to keep a full grown adult in a 180.
Tropical Gar would need about 180 gallon, gets to 45".
Spotted Gar would need a 180, also gets 45".
Shortnose Gar get to around 30" and can prolly manage to something a little smaller than a 180.
And those are the smaller gars.

true gars do get huge and i think theres no chance in keeping a gar to adulthood in a 75. a shame because they are very likeable fish, and not everyone who wants to keep em can

Lepisosteus platostomus- shortnose gar 2 1/2' is the smallest of the true gar species and into adult hood you'll need a tank at least 36 inches wide.Due to their scalation gars are not flexible like many fish and require a wide turning radius.-Anne

vitali - I don't understand, you know that those gars get 45" and 30" respectively, and think they'll be fine in a 180, which is 24" wide? :D

its surprising to see any gar besides a gator gar that is over 24" in a home aquarium - they certainly have the ability to get that big but it takes years and years and yes you would then need something bigger then a 180
