What happens to a gar if it's kept in tank width dimensions too small for it? For example, a tropical gar kept in a tank with a width of 18". Tropical gars may reach up to 24". Would this stunt the gar's growth or make it more likely prone to back injuries? Thanks

Both back and snout injuries and stunned growth, also will cause a server amount of stress. Because of their hard ganoid scales Gar are preatty stiff fish so they have some trouble turning in a confined area. This can generally be applied with any fish not just gars.

I've seen tanks with horrible conditions so I wonder what would happen to gars because of their backbones and body shape as well :nilly:

I got a 2 foot wide tank and a Spotted Gar, I count on this space to be sufficient for a few years, until my wife gets the new couch,
and I get the new Monstertank!
Seen some vids on You-tube of a gator gar ,I think, who could just move up and down in his tank.
Very sad to see...

pretty sure what happens is they'll be stunted(moreso due to water quality imo than actual tank size), and there'll be an increased risk with snout and spine injuries. go for 3' wide with atractosteus gars bro:P
