I have a diy filter for my indoor 360g fibreglass tank. I used a 55g plastic drum as the main vessel. Inside are 3 plastic crates stacked up which act as a trickle filter. Inside each crate are various types of media. The overflow from my tank enters the top crate and my pump is at the bottom of the drum returning water to the tank. It's as easy as that. Super cheap, super easy and super efficient.

To give you a few other ideas just go on you tube and enter "diy pond filters".

above during a water change, and below, the 50 gallon barrel I used as a sump for about a decade.

Below a side shot with a fluidized bed reactor beside it.

Since I see no need for baffles (Using filter socks for mechanical) I just used the barrel as is, the only "making" was the plumbing, to and from the tank, which will be individual to your tank.
A sump is just a container to put stuff like pumps, heaters, and media in.
And a canister, is basically just a small pressurized sump.
The pressurization is just a hassle to me, because it complicates and lengthens maintenance, and is another thing to go wrong if not sealed properly.
You'll notice even my DIY fluidized bed filter is not pressurized like most commercial ones, for the same reasons.
