i need to treat my gar for finrot and was wondering how sentivie they are to medication.

how well do they handle maracyn and maracyn 2?

I've never used meds to treat my gars. Just heat, salt, and water changes. But, Maracyn II should be safe enough for them.

i agree with phil. i have used some meds in the past, but that was several years ago. since then i have used nothing but water changes and heat. i have used salt from time to time, but nothing in the past couple years. gars have very fast fin-regenerative capabilities, faster than most fishes, so if you just bump up the water changes and increase the temp to about 80-82F they will recover very quickly.

if you do decide to use the meds, just monitor the fish closely as a lot of the more primitive fishes do not react so well to meds outside of water changes/heat/salt. good luck!--

Are you sure it is fin rot? by the species in your sig it sounds like Fin feeding by one or a few in there.
(Silver dollars & RTS)

Don't medicate the fish in a community with any antibiotic...remove it to a seperate tank.
You should always avoid using medications in full community tanks.

Before even treating it with higher heat or salt be sure that you know what you are treating.
I'm pretty sure though given that list of fish that this has nothing to do with an illness but rather a compatibility issue.

Keeping up with very good and heavy water changes would still be a very good idea.

good call richard...i didnt even look at the signature :irked:

i agree with polypterus here on all counts, check that its not the tankmates picking on the fish...if it is, you will have to consider separating them permanently, as it will just happen again if the fish heals up. also separate them if you do find you have to use the meds (as richard said).
again, gar fins will heal up VERY quickly, but if they are constantly being torn up by tankmates, you may have to rethink the community situation in your tank. good luck--

no its fin rot, after wating the tank a little close ive noticed the butterfly, the silver dollars and the red tailed shark have it too, theres also a lttle it of white fuzz around the fins, i was gonna isolate him, but now i have to treat a whole bunch of them so im just gonna treat the whole tank. no bodys pickin on him, everybody stays away from him. i think tey got it from a bunch of bad feeders......... no more feeders for these guys............

this is its second occurance in the tank, the first one was just on the buuterfly, before i go the gar.

If you have a gar with fin rot then you most likely have some serious problems with that tank. Gars generally are highly resiliant to such illnesses unless under very poor water conditions or very stressed. Have you checked ammonia and pH of the tank lately? If not do it quickly.

I would highly suggest doing a 75 to 80% water change adding 1 or 2 tablespoons of salt per gallon. Avoid medications until you find the root cause of the problem and fix it.

the tank is and has been testing with perfrect parameters. the onl think i did differently is add 3 dozen feeder guppys a few weeks ago. this seems to me the root of the infection. i had a bunch of other outbreaks immediatly after i added those feeders (i dint quarentine them, yeah im an idiot). my bichirs eyes got clouded, the silver dollars stared showing signs of ich, the gar and butterfly fish both got fin rot. ive fixed all but the fin rot with salt and heat. so i have the gar islolated in a rubbermiad floating in the tank. im administering maraycn 2. i have the buttefly fish in a similar enclosure and am administering the same meds.

i do dialy waterchanges of 3.5 gallons on the 100 gallon tank. i already added the salt and raised the temp, that was my first reaction. i knew what i was trying to treat and the cause before posting. i was only wondering how sensitive gars r to the meds i have on hand.

i dont appreciate being talked down upon, i covered my bases, know what im dealing with, just needed to know how the fish in question would respond the treatment i was going to administer. im leaving on vacation in 7 days and need the infection cleared up completely before that time, other wise i wouldnt even consider meds.

thanx for the help, my fish and i greatly appreciate it :headbang2

Remind me to not bother with helping you anymore..In fact you can count on it...I do not care to waste my time with those that either care not to listen or care not to add details that allow one to advise an appropriate protocal for medication. Your so on top of things I guess you can figure it out on your own.

Your not fixing anything with your current treatment but I guess this will just be a lesson for you and one I hope you learn well. Sorry you feel you are being "talked down to" by those that have delt with this in gars and do know the root causes in such fish and the proper protocal for treating them. If this information does not actually interest you then fine just leave it and just keep going over this with your fish over and over again until you figure it out. The solution is actually very simple and the cure to your problem is actually just adjusting something in your own post above.

Good luck....Hope you figure it out
