i have read that gars and plecos do not mix. just wondering if its for all plecos or just some of them. can my 2 albino sailfin plecos be put with my florida gar?

thanks

The gars with plecos thing is kind of a hit or miss situation. The problem stems from the fact that some of the plecos will try to suck the slime coat off of the gars. This is always a possibility therefore if you want to try it you have to be diligent and be prepared to remove the pleco if this starts. Gars without a slime coat, is usually a dead gar.

thats what ive read. the plecos are in a different tank right now, and i was thinking of trying my luck breeding them(if thats possible). the plecos are 6" and 8" each. ive already had bad luck with plecos sucking the slimecoat off.

If they have a history of sucking the slime coat then I wouldn't risk it, they would most likely do it again if given the chance. Any when your gars are resting on the bottom then the plecos would pounce. Definitely no to the pleco idea in your situation.

sorry, what i meant was i had a common pleco thats abuot 3" that i noticed sucking on my angelfishes. he is now with the 2 large albino sailfin plecos and alot of corys. i guess its weather or not i want to risk my gar...in that case...guess no pleco in with the gar.

I have a Royal pleco in with my gars and fire eels, and I plan on adding a few more soon. I've never had an issue, I think most species of plecos that are true herbivores would be fairly safe, commons and sailfins are omnivorouse in nature. My pleco has his driftwood chunk, and gets his algae pellets and he's happy as a clam. I did have commons in the past as well that got alot more aggressive, Royals are not cheap about 25$+ around here. But I would say it was money well spent.

well i have 2 albino sailfin (gibby) that are 6-7" and 7-8" and was wondering if they would get along with the gar. my tank has 2 large driftwood (2x1x1 and 2x1x.5). i guess its better not to risk it.

I have had mixed results with different species of Plecos and Gars. The best advice I can give you is if you add them be very carfull and be prepared to remove the Pleco at the first signs of them going after the Gar. I am very lucky and have a local petshop take many Plecos from me that did not work out and give me good trade deals on a different species, all arrangements were made in advance and cleared with management before the first Pleco went into the tank.
I have had commons from 5" to 8" go after my Gars but around 9" and above they left them alone completly, so size may or may play a factor in this. Gibby Plecos of any size that were not small enough to be eaten, and I have had over a dozen in the tank over the past 10 years ( got too a trade deal on a large Gibby to keep them ) have never been an issue for me with the Gars as well as Royals. L-114, L-014, were removed after a few days, I can tell you right now these WILL go after the Gar once they settle into the tank.
