What are my choices of gar species for a 150 (72x27x18) gallon tank? I know hujetas are not "true" gars but I was considering them because I know they stay realatively small.

I would say 2 spotted gar may be able to be life-ers in those dimns.

Thanks, West. Would I be able to keep my bichirs in there with those Gars? I'll have about 5 bichirs all between 7"-14"(eventually).

I say its a go with the bichirs. People here on MFK are experimenting with bichirs, so join the experiment :)
All though I dont think it will be tight in the tank when everything maxes out, but thats just an opinion. Try to ask under the bichir thread about housing all those fish together.
I never owned a bichir and dont want to give you bad info

i think needle nose gars would do best for a 150 for life, youll never no unless you experiment, imo there should be much agression because there in completely different parts of the tank

is that 27" wide or 18" wide?

if 18" i say florid/spotted for maybe 6-8 months not life..if 27 go ahead for life..they barelly reach 20" in home aquaria

True that! I was saying "go" if the tank is 27" wide being that both those fish dont care to much about the height. Leingth and width a must or it should just be a grow out tank

that's how it seems, but i've read here(and on other boards) that they have the potential to hit 24". but i've never seen any spotted/f gars close to 2', mine's been at 15" and is 2 years old now.

nah, i'm 18" wide so i guess the spotted gars are out.

Yeah I agree, or the spotted gars will jump out:ROFL:

With that width, why dont you try smaller spec. of payara or Piranhas?
Just trying to stay within the teeth fish :)
