Hey guys, I recently got myself to Alligator gars, they're both approximately 1 feet long. I've recently transferred them from a smaller pond to a bigger pond with Kois. Unfortunately, they attacked a Koi and I was forced to temporarily barricade them with rocks. I've been trying to get them to eat fish pellets, but they just won't eat the pellets. What should I do?

I'd really appreciate the helpful advices.

Going based off my limited knowledge, a lot goes into why they won't eat, have u checked the temp of ur pond? Nitrates? Nitrites? Ammonia? could be stress to constant movement and not being able to get stable. Another big thing is, gars or any predator fish need to be trained to accept pellets.

first, gator gar shouldn't be kept with koi! Second, starve them a few days or until they accept the food, you can feed them dead fish and shrimps!

My parents refuse to feed them live fish. Exactly how do I train the Gars to feed on pellets? and Sevank21 I'm not too sure about the temp and nitrates. I've never thought to check those, but my Koi-s are doing fine with the temp/nitrate/ammonia in the pond.

Ive had these guys before. Put ur hand to close and u will get bit! Secondally mine grew 6"/month so be prepared for a man made lake. And lastly they breath air not water so they tend to jump out alot!

These guys will eat anything. Try white fish fillet in a few days, just plop in the water and theyll eat, they are survivors and it takes some serious serious neglect to adversly harm these guys or kill them!

Goodluck

Yes these gar are very cool and get very big I got one three weeks ago. He was only about four inches long then. I think he is about five inches now. They will eat when they get hungry enough.

They will continue to eat the Koi no matter what else you feed them as long as they are in the same pond. as far as training them to dead.. the stickies at the top will tell you a few approaches, and you may also want to read the profile stickied on Alligator gar and their temperments/requirements ect.
