garter snake setup

How does this soud for a setup??

20 gallon long aquarium
potting soil from walmart for subsrate or dirt from my backyard
water bowl and decor of course
heat pad under tank
all glass lid

Don't they need water in the tank? Besides drinking water. Also maybe a drier substrate.

Also make sure the potting soil doesn't contain the white stuff in it.

I'd say away from potting soil altogether. It will MOLD.

Go with some kind of reptile bark, cypress, or aspen shavings.

A big water bowl will suffice for the garter's water needs...their substrate should NOT be wet. That causes mold in the substrate and blistering of the skin if exposed to it for long periods of time.

Garter snakes really don't need water. They do hunt in the water, but spend most of their time on dry land. I would look at mulch as well. Just don't forget to replace it once in awhile.

cypress mulch, aspen or fir bark aka orchid bark. all are fine substrates for your gartersnake.

couldnt he also use eco-earth dried?
