gatf feeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very interesting. How big was that first feeder that they took apart. I haven't seen them take apart larger fish I've only seen them eat small ones whole. This changes my feeding strategy. I've always wanted to feed them whole frozen smelt but I thought they were too big. But if they can take it apart then maybe I'll try it. I'm just concerned if I start then they won't take pellets or sticks anymore.

Nice video, how big are they and how long have you had them?

thanks, the biggest is 6-7"+- and the smallest is 5"+-. i'll have to look up when i got them it has not been that long a few months or so. they have grown surprisingly fast!

it was 2-3" or so. i'll measure the next one. they can shred things like no tomorrow! they bite it and shake like a dog! i took out my peacock bass for 2 reasons, #1 it was a prick it would steal the goldfish from the tigerfish as they shred them. #2 the tigerfish started looking at it hard and i felt it was in danger of being next as i try for nonlive food. so far the smaller 2 take fillets.

this is more of a selfish feeding for them, they work more together for alot of the feedings. one reason i have mentioned pack hunting before from feedings like this. i wish i could have gotten it from start to finish because they actually cornered it by pushing it as a group then started to rip it apart. they definatly work as a group. the smaller 2 mostly do the hunting, while the larger one will hang in the shadows in case it slips by the other 2. it was a suprise to me when i seen it the first time, like a shoal of piranhas.

Very cool fish.. makes me want to sell off some of my guys for some Vitts...

If you're trying to get them off live I would start ASAP. The older they get the more stubborn they get. I've had much easier time getting VATF to take non live than my GATF. I would feed my VATF sticks and pellets while the GATF would just look. He was almost on the edge of starving when he finally started taking non live.

thanks,

the only fish that doesnt take nonlive is the largest. it will bite it and spit it out. they were doimg this with foodsticks so fillets seemed to come natually to them. i have heavy flow in the tank as you can see, it is somewere close to 1700gph. things tend to do erratic fish like things under that much flow so it makes it easier to make the changeover.
