had the gatf for 17 days and he hasnt eaten anything?

ive tried many different foods.
the home he came from previous he was eating chopped lance fish and samon.
ive tried them along with, white fish fillet, trout, prawns, mussles, beefheart, chicken, even live food(danios + tetras)

any ideas? how long can they not eat for? i have patince as i keep piranhas but i dont want to lose him and thought they couldnt go too long with out food seeing as though how much he moves all the time

Depends on the size as far as how long he can go with out food.
I have a 7" Vittatus and Ive went 3 weeks before giving in for some feeders (trying to get 1of2 off live). Hope this helps

what are his tank mates? how is the tank setup, and size?

What's the temp in your tank? if on the cool side bump it up a bit to speed up the metabolism.

Also as BSIXX asked, what other fish do you have in there?

hes in a 5x20x20
hes on his own
temp is 79
hes a bout 8 inches

sand substrate, 1 x large external filter and a 3500 lph powerhead.
water quality is good, tanks been running for over 3 years with no problems.

he wa a bit battered when i got him as he was in with another goliath a 5-6 vatf and afew chichlids.so he had a lot of scales missing.
he now looks good and has fully healed just he isnt eating?

I would go with his natural instinct and leave about 1 dz minnows in the tank, and just count them everyday to see if hes eating them

maybe the fish is stressed out. perhaps you should provide him with some privacy. perhaps cover the tank for a while so that he cant see you.
