Hey guys had a few questions here.

What would be a minimum size grow out tank for a 2x 3-4" gatf and 1x 3-4" armatus payara?

I have used a 40g breeder for some other fish i've had in the past, but don't know if that will be ok for the gatf and payara?

Or should I look into getting a 75g as a grow out tank?

They will be going into a 400g eventually but currently they are snacks. : (

All input appreciated in advance.

Thanks

How big are the fish in your 400/what are they?
The armatus will outgrow and eat your gatfs. Personally, I'd sell the armatus and buy 1 next year so that your tigers have a year of growth on it.

Ya in less than a year that armatus will be looking at the gafts as food. Ditch the armatus and wait at least a year. I'd personally wait till the gafts are about a foot long cuz that's when the armatus growth slows usually.

A 40 would only last a few months at most for the armatus. Mine grew from 2-9" in about 6 months. I'm not an expert on tiger fish but I would think you'd need a bigger tank for the gafts since they're so active.

I feel pretty much all of my fish currently will eat the gatfs I got a 2 x 18-20" silver aro's 1 x Black are possibly 22" 3 x Florida gars about 16-18" couple motoro rays and some dats.

I think i would need a minimum of a 75g to have a grow out for the gatfs but would the 40 breeder be sufficient till i purchase a 75g and cycle it etc?

You can grow out the tigers in a 40g for a few months, until they are 6-7", at which point you'll really be pushing it and be nervous to look at the tank each morning. You're really going to have to buy a 120g+ (at least 5' long) from there to grow them to 10-12", a 75 will be too small.

I don't even know if a 75 would be safe with just 2 goliaths in the tank. I'd be worried about conspecific aggression, and with just the 2 of them in a small 3 or 4 foot tank I wouldn't feel safe personally. It might be fine, depending on the individual fish in question, but I wouldn't risk trying them in a 40b myself.

A 75 might buy you a bit more time, as would adding a good amount of dithers/target fish to spread out any aggression. Do you plan on having them grown out to a specific size before adding them to the 400? Just wondering if you wouldn't need another intermediate tank if you want them in the 12" range as a 75 would be too small for them to get some real size on them.

Gars and any silvery fish are a BAD combo. Wild gars favorite food silvery fish such as Notropis.

I also completely agree that the armatus needs to go if you want your ATF to live.

Finally, you'll either need to find another ATF or ditch one of the ones you have. Two ATF of that size together will always eventually become one.

Ok so no to the armatus and get another ATF to spread aggression ok thank you

At the sizes of the ATF and Arm arosky mentioned I wouldn't suggest comm'ing them with the Gars but once they're of a decent size I think they'd be alright. I kept 2 Floridas and a Shortnose Gar all around a foot or larger with a school of Silver Dollars(about 5 inches each) and a Armatus(who grew from 6 inches to 14 inches) without incident for quite awhile with no incidents. The Gars totally ignored the Arms and SD's despite having been fed live by the previous owner, which I also had to before finally breaking them onto pellets.

I do agree with ditching the Arm and other ATF though as at very least the Arm will take out the ATF's. In my experience Arm's really hate other silver colored Characins especially elongate fish like ATF's.
