I think GATF's are one of the coolest and most impressive fish. I would love to have one of these one day. I'm wondering if anybody on here has kept one with an alligator gar though. I know if a GATF is much smaller he will obviously become food. But I'm talking about introducing two fully grown specimens with a tank big enough to give both plenty of space.

I never seen this type of combination , however I wouldn't do it beacuse an alligatar gar can eat things that are like half his size and we both know how big each get. Also where would you find two of these fully grown fish? and what size tank would you put them in demension wise

I would grow them out separately. I have a tiny gator gar now. Despite their reputation, gator gars rarely get over 4' with most stopping somewhere around 3'. A user on here has had his gator gar for 14 years and it is only 38". I'm in the process of building a 8x5 plywood tank that I would presumably use as their home. How big have you seen a GATF get in a home aquarium? Biggest I have heard of is 24" but I'm only a newbie lol

I have seen video of an aquarium with 1 or 2 GATF, 3 or 4 armatus, and a Florida gar. They were all around 12" except the gar which was closer to 16". Gars have relatively small mouths compared to say a rtc of the same length.

i personally wouldn't put my gatfs with any of my gars. the tigerfish are way too twitchy and dart around too much. the gars are 99% guaranteed to kill the tigerfish in some reaction bites if nothing else. most of the time silver fishes and gars don't end well. look in the gar section and you will see that most people will agree.

now i do have my 20" south american lungfish in with them and they seem to be fine. the tigerfish were freaked out when i first put it in with them, but now they don't even notice it comming up for air.

Theres a picture of a 30 something inch GATF in the characin media lounge... Personally I wouldn't mix them even though ironically the 30 incher is in with a gator gar in a 900 gallon I believe. You'd have to grow them out separately for sure and then make sure the tiger fish is bigger then the gar. The tank would have to be big enough also for the tiger fish to be able to to swim normally which for a tiger fish is erratically fast and perilous which are all things gars hate, and the gar would have to have enough room to chill out away from its constant crazed movement especially during feeding...However if the GATF is a fin nipper like some/most of them are, your just about screwed. It would be a very tough thing to do without purposely overcrowding an enormous tank which would need enormous filtration. Not to mention how drastically different the growth rates are. Good luck though man, if you do succeed with this it'll be a real amazing tank to see, I hope you do, good luck.

Do you have any idea how big "fully grown specimens" are?

Do you have a swimming pool for them?

Personally, I've kept goliath tigers with all sorts of fish without any problems...just make sure whatever fish you mix aren't small enough to me food for it's tankmates.
