So I recently got a 55 gallon tank, got it up and cycled and was ready for fish. I gave my old 20 gallon to my girlfriend and she put neons, a betta, a butterfly loach and 2 bristle nose plecos in it. So I didn't have a quarantine tank. I moved my 4 juvenile turquoise severums I bought from Jeff Rapps from the 20 gallon (they are only about 1.5-2" each) to the 55 then went out and bought 5 German blue rams on an impulse. I had store credit with a LFS I don't want to go to anymore because they don't guarantee their fish, it's too far away and they price gouge the crap out of their customers. However, they have always had pretty good quality fish. So with $30 of store credit burning a whole in my pocket, I bought 5 GBR for at $13 each. Yeah...store credit and then some.

Anyways, I got everyone situated after we got home and seemed fine. There are 3 new pieces of driftwood soaking in the 55. I know the tannins don't harm any fish and I don't have the space to soak the, anywhere else. So the water was dark when they were added to the tank. Well this evening (24 hours after bringing them home) I notice that a few of the rams are flashing pretty frequently. I monitored until I noticed white spots on 2 rams. So I have ich. Here is my dilemma. I have live plants in the tank and I hear that they don't do well in salt. Now I only have about $20 invested in plants. The 4 juvie severum I have cost me $100, so you can imagine that if given a choice, I will kill the plants before the fish. LOL

The current parameters are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and almost 0 nitrates (maybe 5ish). pH is around 7.0-7.5. Water is a little hard. The test I have goes up to 120ppm and it reads 120ppm. In my old 20 galln, I would dilute the tap water with distiller RO water from the grocery store and the hardness dropped to about 60-80ppm. Dilution was about 50%, so I am guessing the hardness is about 120-160ppm, give or take. The normal temp is about 80 degrees.

I am in the process of increasing the temp with the intent of reaching 85-87 degrees. Now what is the best way to kill off this ich in a planted tank with sensitive GBRs and my severums? I have Rid Ich + from an ich attack on the 20 gallon when I first set it up over 6 months ago due to bad neons (didn't end as well as I wanted). Should I use just heat, heat and salt, or the Rid Ich meds? And again, please keep in mind I will kill the plants if necessary to save the fish. Recommend whatever will be best for my very prized and expensive fish. LOL

Okay, so the heater I have can't bring the temp up past 81, so I guess I am going to have to do the meds because I don't have money to buy another heater. And it is definitely ich. I see more spots of both fish and 2 others. Do I have an alternative here that doesn't require me to spend more than $10?

On a side note, one of the pieces of driftwood I placed in the tank has grown some sort of slime on it. It looks like a transparent coat of snot/mucus. Any idea what this is? I have little ghost shrimp in the tank who seem to enjoy climbing around on it or eating it, but it has not reduced. In fact, I think it might be spreading to the java fern I placed in the driftwood.

Newly introduced driftwood grows this white fungus, your fish will eat it and it is not harmful. As for your Ich, I would try a melachite green based medication. Not sure if it's invert safe (shrimp), it isn't amphibian safe so remove any you may have.

I have Rid Ich + from an ich outbreak in the 20 gallon about 6 months ago. I really need to find a cheap 20 gallon setup and make it my quarantine tank. My severums seem fine. They are not flashing and the rams are not flashing quite as much as they were yesterday, though obviously they are still infected. I am removing the filters tonight and beginning treatment. Hopefully the outbreak is over quickly and no one dies. I hear GBRs are sensitive, but this stuff says its okay for scaleless fish, so hopefully it will be okay for them.

My rams are spending a decent amount of time in the upper level of the tank. I know they are mostly bottom level with a bit of middle kind of fish. Should I be overly concerned about this behavior? Is it the ich or signs of something else? Don't care much about the shrimp. They are easily replaced and it would take me forever to get everything out of the tank to catch them, which would only stress my more expensive fish out further. As far as amphibians go, I no longer have any. I had a frog and newt that came with the 55 gallon I bought, but I rehomed them recently.

I would probably treat at half dose since it does sound like a minor outbreak. As far as the rams hanging near the top, it could be from the Ich and stress that comes with it. Or they are sub-dominant to the Severums and have no territory.

Yeah. It doesn't look too bad. They only have about 6-8 white spots each on 4 of 5 rams with none of the severums showing signs of spots. You posted about 5 minutes after I finished dosing the tank. I used full dose, so we will see how things fair. Hopefully everything will be fine. The Rid Ich bottle says it fights parasites and fungal infections, so I am hoping it will hinder or maybe even kill off the stuff on the driftwood. It sad not for use with inverts, so I will likely lose my shrimp, but at least they are easily replaced.

The sevs are only 1.5-2" each and spend most of their time hiding. They have still not learned to associate me with food and hide from me. The rams will spend plenty of time down around the driftwood, but I often see them near the surface. Odd behavior, but it might mean absolutely nothing. I think the rams are still staking out their turf since they were added about 4-5 hours after the sevs. There have been no altercations between rams and sevs so far and I often see one of the sevs swimming with the rams when the rams are down around the driftwood.

End of treatment day one. Some spots gone, but still a few there. Everyone is still alive and looking pretty good. Hope they continue to look this good on the last day of treatment. The fungus or algae or whatever it is on the driftwood is out of control, so I am removing it and giving it a good scrub down to remove it. I am going to keep it out of the tank and soaking in a tote until the stuff stops growing.

Day three over with. Last spots are gone. No one is flashing anymore and they all look good. I will treat for 3 more days and if all is still well, they will be done. :) They all look very good. No one is lethargic or weak looking, so I have high hopes that this will be finished without any losses. Looks like I lucked out with the GBRs. These ones are not as sensitive as many have reported the species to be.

There is a solution i use, and its called "Copper Power". Its in a clear bottle with black lettering and the liquid is light blue/transparent. When added, its not good for invertebrates obviously, but it remains active in your tank for months even with the filtration still in and doesn't really do much discoloration. I swear by it because i got an ich outbreak in my discus tank when i added german rams to it. Haven't had an issue ever since. My discus and rams do just fine which are two very sensitive fish. I even used that stuff to kill nematodes in my oscar tank in under 24 hours. Its designed for salt water but it works well in fresh. I add a cap of it any time i add a new fish to any tank for obvious reasons.

Well last night was the last night of treatment. Spots were gone by the end of day 3 and I treated for 3 more days. Everyone is active and alert. No losses! Plants turned a bit brown in small spots, but I think they can recover. The shrimp even pulled through too. :)
