Hi, ive been scouring the net for detailed info on keeping south American cichlids, and monster fish continually pops up as a wealth of knowledge about all types of fish keeping and I just want to join in the fun. My current setup is a 4x2x2ft tank with a natural driftwood/log, rocks, few plants with a large vieja species male that I would like someone to help me identify, Guttalatum maybe? Anyway have a lot more questions as well, look forward to meeting like minded aquarists!

hello ! :D
u can start by showing off your fish and tank setup. freely asked any questions but im no pro at giving an answer though. hahah

077.jpg076.jpg078.jpgthis is my guy he's 25 30cms pretty aggressive to anything around him, in the pic he is in a holding tank while his normal tank is getting a spring clean, any info on what vieja species he is would be exremly helpful as i would like to purchase the correct mate for him, plus it will help with setting up his tank, water and food so hes a happy guy, cheers

hhmm, sorry, but i really dont have much info on these guys cuz i have never kept them bfore. but from ure tank dimensions, ure tank is a 120g. ive seen in an lfs, they mix viejas with king kong parrots. is your vieja alone in the tank?

yeah he's alone he was living with a 45cm red bay snook, but he got upset and killed it last week which was very upsetting, here's a pic of the tank setup. probably change it up next water change thou20140202_182318.jpg

woaahh, tht tank look so small if compared to your fish. i mean your vieja is huge. cool. and from wht u have said tht it killed a red bay snook, i dont think u can add anymore. but maybe plecos can do.

thanks! i'm proud of my boy, i thought about plecos but im not that into them, would like to find a female but dont know his correct spiecies, someone told me convicts would be ok because they are small enough for him to not feel threatend and attack, but aggressive enuogh to keep him at bay if he gets too close

It will be hard also because he is mature now and owns the tank, other cichlids are seen as a threat most likely.tou could try a non-cichlids species.some cichlids don't bother different fish
