Texas
I'm somewhat new to Texas so I'm having a blast with Texas wildlife. As of yesterday, I'm collecting American Toads that are somewhat easy to find outside. I got up to 3 (All but a few that I get by August are going to my mom for her birthday present - she's a gardening freak) and last night I caught one of my favorite things - a house gecko. I did my research, but I couldn't find anything about keeping them WITH toads. They live together outside, so it's probably doable, but I'd like some help or ideas turning my 20g into a perfect home for both species.
As far as diet, they are eating crickets. I'm gutloading them with fishfood (recommended online, which I happen to have plenty of :P ) before I feed them. I also feed moths since I have an overabundance of them outside. Since I caught the gecko yesterday, I didn't have a chance yet to go get the calcium supplement to put on them or a mister.

Two of my big questions are this... the supplement geckos need sprinkled on their food: is that harmful to toads? And a heat rock for the gecko - would my toads just sit on it and fry to death for fun?

I'm not sure what substrate I should be using to meet all their needs - right now I have some stuff I bought a few months back. Since it's been awhile, I don't remember the name. It was a big brown brick, I had to put it in a bucket, add water, and it turned into this dark brown fluffy stuff. Maybe someone knows what I'm talkin' about. Anyway, I know the package said it was okay for toads. Can I use it for my gecko too?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Wow you are lucky. Okay I'm not a pro, but if you are catching the geckos and toads, they shouldn't NEED the sprinkles, but they will help. I don't think toads need those, though. Find out what they eat over there where you live, and feed them those. I guess crickets and beetles are good. I know what you're talking about you're substrate, I use that for my tortoise, and it's good. It should be fine for you're gecko and you're toad.

And I don't think that keeping toads and geckos together is such a good idea, especially in a 20g.

I wouldn't recommend keeping them together. I know you found them living around you but they both require a somewhat different habitat then the other. Plus the fact that your toad will and I mean will eat your gecko someday.

They cohabit in the wild but not in the space of a tank..ghecko is a goner.....

Pretty much what Miguel & Vicious said...unless they're lil tiny toads they will eat the gecko. I've never really had luck keeping a toad with anything else because eithe they eat it or they hog up all the food.

If you decide to separate them the toads shouldn't need any heat source at all, and for the gecko I'd put in a small red bulb (they don't bask anyway, it would just be for a little heat). You might be able to just mix some of the calcium with the fishfood you feed the crix, or you could go the sprinkle route. Also gutload the crix with any veggies, carrots are good for that.

The toads are all under 2'' and the gecko is pushing four, so for now he isn't dinner. Thanks for all the advice :)

I have an empty 10gal I could use, but only for the gecko. I wouldn't try putting the three toads in it - the 20 is sufficient but I'm expecting more. I hope. After August 8th I'll only have 2 toads max. Would the 10g be too small for the gecko?

I guess it would be ok. I have a common gecko in a smaller tank....
