I just got a JD last week, wanted a male, got a female, so I went back to the lfs monday, and managed to get a male. Both are about 5" and this morning when I left they were chasing each other around like they were kinda fighting, I got back and did a water change, then they were in a liplock for at least 4 min that I noticed, finally got the female out of the tank in fear that one of them was going to get killed (that and I don't want them breeding if that's what they were doing until they are in the bigger tank). They really did look like they wanted to kill each other, held the liplock halfway across the 55, under a rock, and just about back out of the rock before I got it broken up. Now the female is acting pissy (she is the one that got pulled out) and the male is searching around the tank like a lost puppy dog. Is there anyway they could already be trying to breed or were they just trying to kill each other? If they are just fighting I can put her back and keep an eye on it, but I don't have enough space in the 55 for them to be defending the eggs, so if it sounds liek breeding I'll just keep them separated til they move into the 360 later. Sorry for the long post, I'm new to jd's and ca cichlids period.

My friends RDs bred in a couple of days, but I don't know about JDs. I know that some cichlids will fight before breeding to see if they're worth it, lol... I'll wait for the experts though...

Sounds like either she was testing him to see if he is a worthy breeding partner or they were trying to establish dominance of the tank. One has got to be the boss you know. There's always a pecking order.

sounds like breeding to me watch that the male doesn't beat the female
