It's an ok size for discus but you'll have to keep up on maintanance to keep them healthy, especially with the other stock in there putting off waste.
Many people think that barebottom is best for discus, me included, because it is easier to keep clean and great water quality promotes growth and health. If you start with baby discus they require several feedings a day while they're growing, which can quickly foul your water.
Personally I would ditch the discus in this case, unless the tank was strictly devoted to them and barebottom, but it is your choice. You've been warned ;)

As far as specific stocking I don't like to give advice on that since everyone has their own personal tastes. I could point out several fish and you might say "ew" to every single one of them. The only time I usually help people stock is if they point out specific fish they like and then I can give advice on which ones to pick.

Personally if I had a 42g (which isn't likely since I've decided not to go with anything under 75g after the 55g is gone), I would go with smaller native fish like dace, blackbanded sunfish, madtoms, darters, etc. I love native fish but mine are larger and in a 125g so most smaller fish will get eaten which eliminates my ability to keep most small natives.

If you want some ideas for stocking tropicals I'd go to liveaquaria.com and peruse their freshwater selection to see what interests you.
