Most fish stores have a cheap mixed Malawi tank, and most people who keep Africans end up with all kinds of hybrids, I am just wondering how do the species end up staying pure in the wild?

The strains do intermix occassionally in the wild. However, regional separation and colony behavior (per territorial imperative) keep the mixing to a minimum. That can't be duplicated in the confines of aquariums.

Pretty much what was stated above. They tend to stick together in sperate regions or parts of the lake and while sometimes they can intermix, they usually tend to stick with their kind.

The mbuna are found in specific rocky areas within the Lake. They do not cross the vast open portions of the lake. Some species are more widely distributed than others, but some are endemic to fery small areas, example is the Lab. caeruleus(yellow morph).
How to do this in the tank environ is to have ample females for each male you have. This should prevent inter-breeding to a large extent.
It must happen in the ake from time to time.
Heard a story whereby species are found in areas where they don't exist. Their knopwn ares being many miles away. They are caught then dumped by indiscriminant divers in the wrong ares.:cool-1:  :naughty: :woot: :headbang2
