I've got some wood that I found at a local reservoir and I am unsure if it is safe to use or not.

I have just read probably 500 posts from at least 20 threads going through 13 pages of search results. So don't tell me to search, I've located lots of answers but could not find this one.

If the wood has some soft areas and some hard areas does that mean it will all eventually get soft underwater and fall apart? I have no idea what kind it is but it was found by the shore of said reservoir all dried up. Some of it is kind of soft feeling but other parts are hard like the Mopani driftwood I already have. However I no longer want to pay for it because $10-$20 for a chunk of wood is ridiculous. So I am trying to DIY this time.

I already know the boil it, bake it, bleach it, scrub it, etc.

So to recap..

I just want to know if the wood will be ok to use if I remove any soft parts leaving only hard wood or will it all become soft eventually and rot away?

I will post some photos later, they are really nice pieces.

Boil it and it will be safe, the longer the better. Without know the type of wood I can't guess how long it will last.

Good luck, waiting for pics

Just a little tip from old mate here *points to himself* If I can scratch away large portions of wood with my fingers I wouldn't use it, even if it's soft in little spots, chances are it will eventually go soft all the way through. Although I'm talking about wood from Australian trees, it might be different to you blokes over there.

Lol, good one old mate, now I regret mentioning the whole scratching the wood bit.
