I'm currently growing out 4 abalios (they're about 4" right now, starting to color up pretty nicely). I'd like to give them their own tank and set up an Amazon biotope around them, but I was wondering how they do with smaller tankmates. I'm sure, being cichlids, that they will probably eat very small tankmates given the chance, but are they always really predatory toward maller tankmates even if well fed?

Basically, how small of tetras, cories, etc. would be relatively safe with them once they are larger?

I've got a full grown male in my eartheater tank with some platies, and he could care less about them. It's the other eartheaters in HIS tank that he chases around. They don't really get the "aggressiveness" that people give to all cichlids. I had him in a growout tank for almost a year with baby bichirs and some other randoms, and he didn't give..

I have a male and two females all around the 8" mark or so and they are in with juvie rotkeils and juvie geo orange heads at 1.5". I never had any problems just as sick_lid pointed out they don't really care about small fish. Mine however do not get along with satanoperca. I will however say that if you do manage to get them to breed, abalios do not care what size the fish, they are going to get them out of their territory the same as all other cichlids.

When people speak of them as aggressive, compared to allot of cichlids their aggression is more like "hair pulling and name calling", not the "prison yard" for lack of a better way to put it. Tetras and corydoras would be great with them IMO and look wonderful. ;)
