Geo aquascaping

IME you got to have sand of some sort. They are pretty active and I notice they like open spaces and will often glide from one end of the tank to the other.
 
I have a mixture of driftwood and rocks (slate) and most of all, fine sand. The finer the better for them, but can be a problem with filters. I use PFS from Leslies.

Geos prefer large open sandy areas, but also need placed to hide out if startled.
I have large branches and logs placed along the back panel for refuge, and leave the front areas bare for sand sifting. I also use pool filter sand as substrate.
