Geo ID and growth potential

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It looks like G. altifrons. If so, they are large growing geos that can reach 10 - 11"+. They're also one of the more assertive geos.

IMO the one in the pic looks a bit runted/stunted just based on its head/eye size and coloration, but it could still turn around if you gave it proper food and kept up the water quality.

We'll that would be great, looks kinda likes the shape and coloring style of altifron a which I was looking for, but Im no ego expert. Although I am leery if it may be stunted ass I have some fairly big growing fish in my tank...

Many times because of crowding, or the stress of competition with too many of its own kind, those fish in LFSs or grow out tanks growth is slow, and seems stunted, but with proper water changes, feeding and a less stressful environment, potential is released. If it is G altifrons it may end up like this 10" individual.

I bought a few very similar, labeles as Geo Surinamensis but more likely Altifrons...

G. surinamensis are extremely uncommon in the hobby and most LFS altifrons are mislabeled as surinamensis. This is how they appear on wholesale lists. I see multiple fish farms in Florida selling geos as surinamensis but in actuality they are usually altifrons or abalios.

LFS label them whatever the exporter/wholesaler calls them, so the mislabeling continues there.

Oh lol that's fine then I don't mind an altifron either. It's just labeled as geophagus cichlid so that's fine lol
