I found this guy at my lfs was labeled Surinamsis. I had to bring him home I felt he was something special. Also two others that look identical

Word. So a good steal? 3.99 a piece I can't complain. How do I know the difference between altifron or abailios?

great deal! the second one is an altifron. you can tell by the red and yellow coloring on his caudal and tail fin. look at my avitar and compare the coloring. it's similar. also on the tail fin, altifrons have blue spots where as abalios have a stripped pattern. Also when they get a bit bigger, alts have a little to no black dot and abalios have a big black dot. the guy u have may be to small to fully tell, but im going to go with altifron
 
those stiendachneri are really fun fish to keep- i also have altifrons.

The most tue and accurate way to tell the difference is the size of the midlateral spot. (black area on the side flakns of the fish mid way under the dorsal) If it is large covering more than 4 scales, it will rule out g. altifrons as a candidate. After that, I start looking at caudal pattern etc..

There are many species with a larger mid lateral spot, they are just not commonly seen and most immediatly ID'ed (in many cases) as g. abalios right out of the gate IMO.
