I just picked up 6 juvi tapajos and have a few questions. They are about an inch. How long could I keep the group in a 55 gallon(4ft) before i need to move them to a larger tank.

I'd like to get a small schools of tetras to go with them. Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Tony

Lemon or congo would probably be best bet, emperors also will work but cost twice as much

You can keep pretty much every Tetra/Pencilfish species with them, so I'm not sure why people are only recommending very particular species, although I'd avoid the quite small species such as Ember Tetra (H. amandae) and similarly sized Tetra which hang around the 2cm mark fully grown. Better to be safe.

They'll only begin to be crammed in a 55 once they're pushing about 5", and I'd say that will be in 12 months time (purchased mine at about 1" TL, dominant males were pushing 6" 13 months later)

"Tetra" means "four" in Greek, which refers to the four unpaired fins on the fish - dorsal, caudal, anal, and adipose. It's not a phylogenetic or a taxonomic term. There are many monster tetras that would consider Geophagus tasty snacks.

Indeed there are, but when I say "Tetra" in a community aquarium sense, what does your mind direct you to? :)

I guess my mind directed me to some tetras Ken brought back from Uruguay - little 2" fish with beautiful teeth. He said everybody was eating everybody there and I'm sure he meant it in a literal sense. ;)

Personally I would love to try an Exodon community tank one day...
