Hi guy, I just want to get some information for my friend. His red head geo just laid eggs again and this is the second times but this time, the male is holding egg inside his mouth. I'm not sure how long has it hold but I believe the eggs will hatch in like couple days if fertile. He just told me this afternoon he sees What is the best chance for the frys to survive. He house his 3 red head ( 1 male, 2 female) in a 265gal tank with other fish: couple angel fish, 1 flag tail and 1 small silver. He is getting a 4ft tank for geos. Should he take the parent out or just male ? Thanks

I plan to breed these guys myself very soon, so I have done a lot of research. Chances are he will lose this batch of fry no matter what. All geos mouth brooders will swallow their eggs if they feel threatened. If he tries to remove a holding parent.....gulp. Even if the geos let the fry go beyond free swimming stage, the other fish in the tank will have snacks. My recommendation would be to remove both parents to their own tank where they can breed without stress of someone or some fish coming to take their babies away. Besides, letting a pair of cichlids breed a couple of times in the community tank installs better parental instincts in them and makes them a stronger pair.
