A couple of weeks ago i ordered five geophagus steindachneri. I wanted 2m/3f i receiced 3m/2females. One i was sent (a male) had popeye and died in 2nd day of having the fish. So had another sent to me to replace this fish, i asked him to send me a female to correct both problems. Since i had to pay shipping i saw fit to order an extra female to give a 4f to 2m ratio, i was also sent a suprise another big male to go along with it. The source of all my problems today is the fact they ended up all being males (i think) :irked:. He is a very good guy and i think it was very busy at his shop and not many females. So now brings me to my problem, i have 4m/2 maybe 3 females its fins are ripped up pretty nice from shipping but im leaning towards male. Im going to be narrowing it down to either my dominant male and the two females or two males two females (?) but the wante d situation in this is 2m/3f. Dont think thats happening (male i think instead of high hopes for a female little bity hump and kinda sorta male coloring he is definitly way sub dom if so) buying another female is not an option for i would want a female from the same area and it would have to be wild also for me to be satified. Shipping is expensive and im not going to chance more males again. Im not sure the 2m/2f thing would work out the dom male is not to to agressive towards others just chases but i dont think that would work long term with maturing. The best sounding option is 1m/2f but i really dont want to do that. Another point to that is ive have read eartheaters will lose a lot of the natural act with less than 4. These are my first eartheaters and i know there a little more agressive than most. Im just wanting a little help with weeding out by those that are more EE experience then me, but hey none the less i do have a female holding eggs at the moment!!

What size tank are you working with? (footprint) the number of males you keep long term will heavily depend on territories.

I've been in similar situations when ordering online... I've also had wonderful experiences...

I'm not sure I see the actual question in your post. Keeping the nicest male with any/all females you end up with seems like a decent option...

I have a female heavy breeding group of about 25 Steinys in a 125 gal. It's a very fun/interesting tank. There is a (breeding) pair of Dempseys which really helps prevent the male Geos from clashing to hard.

Mine are a mix of F2 (offspring of an F1 pair I had) and regular old aquarium strain. The group has been living together for a few years and breeding the whole time. Most fo the fish are from the original group but I'm sure a handful are offspring of the original group...

My suggestion is to keep the nicest male with all of the females you have... or order more from the same vendor makign sure he is aware of your situation and only after he makes a garuntee of a female heavy shipment...
