Geo stocking question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here in a couple weeks when I have my 125 setup complete, I am ordering 8 geo red heads from Jeff Rapps. They will be the only bottom feeders and will have plenty of room. In reality, you could likely get away with 8-10 geos of the 6-8" size range.

Roughly how many mid-size geos should be able to fit comfortably in a 125?

Its a loaded question. Depends on species, if your mixing species and more important how the tank is laid out. As an example the "one of each species" type tanks has a completely different dynamic than x10 of one species.

Care to share you plans and we can go from there?

Planning for a group of five G. Winemilleri. Was thinking it might be nice to eventually add some red heads or to mix in some severums at some point. I'd really like to have a nice geo show tank.

You could easily add sevs. They rarely visit the bottom, sticking to the top and middle mostly. If it were me, I would add the 5 Winemilleri, 4-5 red heads and 2-3 sevs. That would max you out for bio load, but you could add a school of deep bodied tetras to the top layer for dithers as they contribute very little to the bio load.

I have 3 breeding pairs of Red Head Tapajos in a 225. more than that they would be running all over each other and would create too much chaos for my liking. If you had all males you would have fewer problems but breeding pairs will be constantly arguing over terratory.

The geo red heads I have seen only take about 50-60 gallons of space for themselves, so I can definitely understand why it feels cramped. Those geos are taking up the entire bottom level (and guarding against anything that enters the middle zone). This is especially true if you have a tall tank as opposed to a long one. At most, you would only be able to add some top dwelling dithers. Though you could do a large school. Those geos are using maybe 40-50% of that tanks bio load capacity. You could add a large school of 25-40 deep bodied tetras (my personal favorite being the lemon tetras). That would add some impressive movement to the tank.
