I am going to be acquiring a 125-180 tomorrow, and I'm planning on setting up a community tank with 5 geophagus surinamensis. I don't really want to use a sand substrate(but if it comes down to it I will). I was wondering if a smooth pebble substrate(something like this: http://www.internationalstone.com/images/ap.jpg) would work well for them, or if there's anything similar I can use. Thank you.

You will need something small enough for them to pick up and sift, though it doesn't have to be sand (though it's best). They were try it with just about any size, and larger sizes will get stuck in their mouths.

Have any ideas on a good dark sand, other than tahitian?

Anyone know where I can find some in nyc vicinity? Also how dense is it? I have used play sand before, and constantly have to clean out the sand in my filter. That's the only reason I didn't want to go with sand, because I love the way it looks.

Hi. I use pool filter sand... you can get it at ACE hardware... Never had a problem with it in my filters and it's cheap, good looking, easy to clean and starts out very clean... Make sure that your filter tubes are several inches above the layer of sand.. I have it in my geo/angel tank as well as many others over the years with no problems.. HTH Sue:D

Man I'm so frusterated. I cannot find 3m color quartz or pool filter sand anywhere. Does anyone in NYC know where I can find it?

Hi there. Sorry you are having such problems.. Pool filter sand should be available at Ace Hardware or any pool supply place.. Try the yellow pages.. I know there are real pool supply places there... not Home depot but a place that specializes and stocks pool supplies.. The 3m you probably have to have shipped to you...HTH Sue:D
