I have a pair of G. abailos, male is 7"+ and female is 5"+ TL. I purchased them from lady who purchased them as wild caught. They have laid eggs twice in the past 2 months. Each time, the female carried the eggs/young for 9 days.

The first time, after the 9 days she spit them out and the male picked them up, carried the fry for 3 days, then I come home from work and they were gone, and neither of the parents were "brooding" with their mouths.

About 10 days later, after a water change, the same process happened again, except:
One of the fry came out and the male ate and swallowed it. Then when I dropped some pellets in for the male, the female came to the pellets and spit out the fry. The male started eating the fry-I could tell he was not brooding them. The female was upset, beat on the male and picked up the remaining fry. Later that night, I put a divider in to split the male and female. In the morning, female was still brooding remaining fry (I am guessing about 40 were left). I come home from work and all the fry were gone and neither parent was "brooding" with their mouth.

That was about 9 days ago and egg tube is dropping again. They are in a 55 gallon with no other fish. Thought about trying a dither or trying the divider again after she picks up the eggs.

Any thoughts from those with mouth brooding geo experience?

first of all let me thank you for using proper grammar. not enough people do that. makes it easier to read.
if you want you can try separating the fry after 9 days and caring for them seperately, the adults might just be bad parents. they should learn eventually though. I think you should seperate the male and female though, definetly after they are done mating.

I guess I am getting old when I get compliments for using correct grammar! Thanks though.

I can separate the female from the male. She will only have the young out of her mouth for less than a minute before she picks them all up again....so almost impossible to separate her from the fry. I may just remove the male, or just be patient until they get it correct. I hate to see her go so long without eating, then gorge for a couple of weeks, then complete the fasting process again.
