Have you tested your water?
Yes
If I did not test my water...
  1. ...I recognize that I will likely be asked to do a test, and that water tests are critical for solving freshwater health problems.
Do you do water changes?
Yes
If I do not change my water...

I purchased this Geophagus Altifrons as one of a group of four. After a day or two in quarantine everything was going fine. That is until I noticed these internal cyst like spots in one of the fish. I am not sure what to think of them so I figured I would ask to get some input. I am concerned the are cyst (are they benign?) but could they also be some sort of internal parasite? Since taking these photos I have removed this fish from the quarantine tank he was in and have placed him in a separate established quarantine tank.

So what do you think? Reason for concern? What do you think the issue could be?

Last water change was 25% yesterday.

Ammonia-0
Nitrite-0
Nitrate-10ppm
pH 7.8

These condition have been stable so there have been no swings in parameters. Also the fish have only been in this tank for a few days. The fish have been acting and eating fine as well. No other signs of issues or disease at this time.9%MH8+mkSYiTAY0bZcOELg.jpgCGFAOqOEQW28h24bZiTiEQ.jpgXI2+mYhaRUCyAMcg%PxrhA.jpg

This happened to a prior fish. Treated with levamisole. Didn’t seem to make it better and the cysts/eggs remained. No updates after that so not where it went.

Did the fish have any negative side effects from the areas? If levamisole had no effect do you think the spots were cyst instead of parasites? I have one female Rainbow fish that has one or two similar spots on her. They concerned me at first but have never changed or had any negative side effects that I can tell. The fish in the picture just has so many that It is a little more suspect and concerning.

My sev has had a cyst near its dorsal fin. I never did anything and it hasn’t seemed to bother him.

I returned the fish to the fish store today. After looking at the fish with several of the employees we agreed that it looked like type of worm infestation. They reported this type of parasite generally stays in the host fish and rarely spends to other fish in the tank. They also reported that in the past the have had success treating this type of fish with PraziPro. Said the Prazi Pro treatment usually takes a few weeks as apposed to a few days since the parasites are located oil the tissue of the fish.
