Geophagus argyrostictus "blue lips"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Discus Origins had some large ones a month or two ago but I don't see them on his list now. Maybe he'll eventually get more in.

I'm not entirely sure why they're being referred to as "blue lips" because as far as I can tell this is a typical trait on all G. argyrostictus.

Agree. Sounds like what you see sometimes where a seller, lfs, etc. likes to embellish whatever is the standard name trying make their fish sound cool. Comes off as a little amateurish imo.

But I've seen them offered from time to time, just one of those fish that aren't super common that you have to keep your eyes for or do a little searching to find imo (aquabid, forum classifieds. some of the other usual cichlid dealers, etc.).

Limited info on these Geo species Argy (blue lip) and lfs have high casualty rate getting them in. My lfs got big amount of them in but on few survived. I was lucky to get 5 of them and they growing out nicely.

They're from the Rio Xingu drainage in Brazil, so not necessarily a place where there's a ton of commercial export.

Their type locality is a rocky pool near cachoeira, Belo Monte, Rio Xingu drainage, Para, Brazil.

Rapps brought some in a shipment from that area a few months ago.

I'm not aware of anyone captive breeding them.
