I bought this fish as a geophagus brasiliensis a few months back, and as he's grown, he's really started to look more like a gymnogeophagus meridionalis. I don't have a lot of experience with either of these fish, so if someone could tell me which it resembles more that would be great.

It does kinda look like a gymnogeophagus of some sort. How big is the fish? The head shape does look a bit off. My G. n sp "sequieria" have a flatter slope to the head and yours looks curved. Brasiliensis in a way look like a bigger version of meridionalis so just keep an eye on him.

He's about 2.5-3". Still pretty tiny. Thanks for the help!

Gymnogeophagus of some sort, there are a bunch that look quite similar though.
