guys, i just got myself a geophagus altifrons and a heros efasciatus sp super red severum.. was wondering if they'd be ok with a shrimp, bloodworms & mussels diet?

Not sure about the Altifrons, but I'd definitely aim for a more vegetable based diet with your Heroines. If my memory serves me correctly (which it usually doesn't), as Altifrons develop they prefer a meatier diet, so that's fine.

Depending on what you would be feeding as their staple diet (I use Hikari), mix in some Skinned Peas and Cucumber. Zucchini and scalded Lettuce have also been recommended to me and I'm sure they would work well, however neither of my fish will eat it. My Severums will eat live shrimp, and I'm sure they'd go crazy over Bloodworms, but I haven't tried it.

I'd personally stay away from mussels, especially if they're saltwater, as I've heard stories of some SA/CA fish being intolerant of them, even though they'll eat them, ending in death/sickness.

I can't get my sevs to eat veg, and i feed them on tetradoromin carnivore pellets (again, they wont eat hikari)

I knew they needed the veg, so i stuck in a ton of Java fern. when the sevs feel like some greens, they can browse off that. actually works really well.

Avoid mussels, way to messy, best to avoid all meaty things (most cichlids wouldn't eat them in the wild at any rate)

My sevs get treats like woodlice, blood worms, dafnia, brine shrimp (small stuff makes them work harder) earth worms, Mosquito larvae (as well as any spiders my missus finds around the house)

my sevs love the veggie clip with Romaine lettuce and some seaweed sheets attached, they graze all day..no need to blanch or scald just rinse and serve..plus they love earthworms the small red ones that wally mart sells for panfish bait...Kens fish food has freeze dried earthworms that are fantastic.

My geos (not alti's but close) love sinking carnivore pellets by Hikari and African Cichlid attack by HBH...

Good luck let's see pics!

thanks guys, will try that lettuce clip thing.. do you think peas would work though?
