Got this Geophagus at the LFS. Sold to me as a "redheaded jurupari." Red is coming in on the tail and bottom fins. Probably around 3-4 inches right now. Circle patterns on tail. Appreciate all input!IMG_5410.jpeg

It is either a redhead (Geophagus sp. Tapajos) nor a jurupari, which are in the genus Satanoperca.

The spotted tail, tiny (almost non-existent) midlateral spot, and lack of a cheek marking all make this Geophagus altifrons. It is a large-growing geo, 8 - 12” and will be rather pushy and belligerent at their adult size.

Agree with Ryan.

The name given by the lfs is a mashup of two incorrect IDs. It's not Geophagus sp. tapajos red (or orange) head, not with the spotted tail and small spot. Red head tapajos have horizontally striped tails, larger spots, and their vertical bars are different. But at least it's in the Geophagus genus; meanwhile, jurupari, a species of Satanoperca, is almost laughably wrong.

Appreciate the feedback! I have a JD and GT in the tank with Gus the Geo here. Perhaps the proper ID explains why he’s holding his own so well.
