Anyone want to take a stab at what these are? I was thinking Brachybranchus because they came from Guyana, but now I am unsure, because they lack the pre-opercular spot, and black throat. They are almost 4", so I am unsure whether they are supposed to develop it at this stage or not? I also ruled out Abalios, as some of them have double mid-lateral spots. Let me know what you think...

I'm by far an expert, but those look like 'Rio Aeroes' to me

Hmmm. Never really thought about them. The barring does look similar. Where exactly is Rio Aeroes located?

Many geo's of the same species have double mid-larteral spots. I have a few F1 siblings, some with single, some with double spots as well. Same thing with my old Acarichthys heckelii group.

(don't forget to add bisect lateral barring to your list of traights to ID against) ;)

Do you have any pictures of the Abalios with two spots? I know it's common with Heckelii, orange heads, and a few other geophagus species, but everyone I've asked says they have never seen an Abalios with this trait.

Do you think they could be Rio Aeroes?

I've only kept two species with those split bars - bars that are "dorso-ventrally bisected by a clearer area, giving the impression of two thinner bars" (LOPEZ-FERNANDEZ & TAPHORN, 2004) - G. orange head Tapajos and G. abalios. These are clearly not orange heads (some of which do have double lateral spots), but I'm not sure if they are G. abalios either :(
