These were labeled G. argyrostictus, but obviously they are not (??).
I have searched around, but i can't find anything quite similar. Looks a bit like proximus, but the vertical lines in the tail fin makes me wonder...

if it were G. proximus at this size I would expect to see the midlateral spot larger and higher in the flank than it is, it could be though. Not 100% sure to be honest at this size, if I had to guess I would say G. abalios based on the midlateral spot and undeveloped caudal markings.

very interesting.. I have never seen a geo that has vertical stripes on the tail? cant wait to see them as adults!

Hmmmm... they do appear to have a faint preopercular mark, but proximus should have horizontal stripes in the tail I think. They don't look like G. argyrostictus at all IMO.

Do the fish have a black throat under their gills? They look a lot like my G. brachybranchus with the exception of the tail markings... brachys have blue spots on a red tail, but yours appear to have vertical lines. I'm trying to find pictures of mine as younger fish to see if the tail started out striped and then turned into spots as they grew, but I don't think so...

I'm also thinking maybe G. dicrozoster. If they are, their fourth and fifth vertical bars will fuse to form a Y shape. It's hard to see the bars clearly in the pictures.

Yeah this is a tough ID.. I have both dicrozesters and Argyrostictus, and Argyrostictus is def out of the question. But dicrozesters, I notice at this size, they have a more elongated body and different head shape. Also the tail has horizontal stripes. Those vertical tail stripes are really throwing me off lol.

Thanks for the feedback.
I am starting to think G.brachybranchus, but not shure at all. I have some adult G.dicrozosters in one of my tanks, and have had them since they where about the same size as these... a bit bigger maby... and they looked different the way I remember it.

brachybranchus will have a black throat under their gills. If you look at the underside of their jaw you should see it. If they don't have a black throat, they aren't brachys.
