possible to keep a geophagus in a planted tank without it completely tearing all the plants to shreds? I am assuming no- with a name like eartheater. Interested to know if anyone has experience with this.

thanks!

i have two geophagus surinamis in my tank its not so much that they will tear apart the plants... what i've discovered is mine tend to pick at the base of the plant constantly and uproot them. my solution... i've put rocks around the base of the plants. my geos still circle the plants and look unhappy that they cant pick at them... but my plant is surviving.

do you think that they would try to pick at plants that are secured to driftwood/ rocks? or is it only the plants along the bottom that are in danger?

i dont have any that are secured to rocks or driftwood but i'd imagine that they would be okay. my geos love to dig in the sand and thats why my plants get dug up so putting them on driftwood is probably worth a shot

I have 4 iporangensis with plants and never had a problem
