I can't seem to find much info about these guys, I can however find info about Gymnogeophagus labiatus. Anyone know of a site that has info on these guys, or knows max size, temperament, feeding, etc.?

There is no Geophagus labiatus that I know of. The lfs or whoever you are buying them from has them mislabeled and is most likely Gymnogeophagus labiatus but post pics and we can give you a proper ID. They are pretty easy as care is concerned. I feed mine small sinking pellets, deshelled peas, and bloodworms. The only thing finicky about these guys is they need a cool down period in the winter, down into the mid to low 60s if possible for 2-3 months. I leave my tanks unheated because the weather in Socal is very similar to Uruguay. Talk to Duanes (i think I got the name right) because the lives in your neck of the woods and can tell you what he does for wintering. Cheers!

That's what I was afraid of, that it was actually a Gym and not a Geo. Was looking at getting 3 Geo's for my SA/CA tank so obviously I don't want to put the tank down to 60F for several months :D

Anyone know if there is harmful effects if you don't keep these at lower temperates for a few months?

I kept a group of G. n sp. "El Norte" and G. labiatus with my Rotkeil severums and after about a year their color really faded and some died :( I wouldn't recommend keeping them unless you are going to do the cool down period

Gotcha, thanks for the response. I'll stick with trying to find a good Geo to go with my current stock then.
