Geophagus neambi tank mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree about adding a large shoal of appropriately sized, mid, to upper water level swimming, geographically correct dither fish.
Is that the thin style background? It really looks great
I had the thick style background, and found it took up too much space in the tank.

Thanks, for the most part its less than 2” thick except one spot that juts out about 4-5” and 6” above the substrate creating a nice little overhang obscured by the driftwood on the right. Do you think 8 geos is doable? The neambi and argyrostictus are medium sized and I would be surprised if the one psittacus sees the fall.

In that size tank 8 Geos should be perfect, even with the addition of non-cichlid shoalers.
I like your idea of the Leporinus too, or some kind of S American Tetras.
I like the way a shoal of tetras remove cichlid shyness.
But 8 Geos might accomplish the same end.

Order has been placed 4 geo argyrostictus and 8 hemiodus gracilis.

Hemiodus should be a great dither choice, nice contrast to the cichlids, in shape, and water column preference, gets rather large (but not too large).
And although attractive on its own, is not so flashy that it detracts attention away from, or steals thunder from the cichlids.

I would like to see what that looks like when you get them :)

If you do want more cichlids I would consider a few Mesonauta, they don’t use the bottom of the tank and are generally pretty peaceful.
