Thanks to some very helpful posts I have decided to go for one or more G. Tapajos as the final installment in my tank. I have reserved an approx 4" male from my LFS and they do have some more, but they are either bigger (5-6") or smaller (2"). I am intending on stocking for good, not just growing out and selling on.

Questions:

a) do I have enough room for more than one?
b) will it be unfair to keep only one?
c) will 2 or more males fight in the absence of females? (I do not want any breeding going on so would rather stick with one sex).
d) If i did get more than 1 would it be OK to go for the 2" ones with the 4" one or would they get bullied loads?

Thanks!

i have never tried two male red head tapajos alone but i do have 5 tapajos in my 90 and their not that bad. i have 3 wild caught 3.5"-4' ones with 2 2.5" ones and their isn't that much picking, just a little chasing here and there but their quite peaceful. I just added my notatus severum, and a 2' gymno and they went right in fine, no fighting what so ever. Geos tend to be quite peaceful. i know i will have to upgrade in the future but geos are pretty slow growers.
Geos like to be in groups from what i have been told. i would say you would be fine as long as you do normal water changes and have good filtration but i would prefer 3 geos and upgrade in the future. if your going to add a little guy with the bigger one, that might cause problems but im not exactly sure since i have a group.

I think you have enough room at least for a while. I dont think keeping one would be a problem. I am not sure about the males fighting but I dont think so. Finally the smaller ones should not be bothered by the larger ones.

b) In my opinion, yes. They do best in shoals/colonies of at least 4 specimens with a reasonable sex distribution (at least 1 Male and Female)
c) If there's only 2 of them, one will always be dominant and pick on the lesser dominant male - to what degree depends on the fish.

so if i got a pair, will they be very aggressive to the other fish if they decide to breed?

And what are people's thoughts on how much space I need?

I can always get rid of the Congo's loater on.....

So, I am down to what I originally thought, 1 or more males, or 1 or more females. My purpose of keeping fish is not to breed them but to have them in a nice display as the centrepiece of a room. Obviously however their welfare is important which is why I ask the questions before buying them!

Has anyone had experience of keeping a lone male? How did he get on?

Dimensions: (WxDxH): 122 x 87 x 65cm

not a red head but i have keep a geo dicrozoster with a convict, green terror, jack and 3 oscar. the green terror pick on him a little bit but nothing bad but when he got tired of the convict and the green terror he put them in their place, like slammed both of them against the glass. but was buddy uped with my jack. he was pretty happy but seemed to be happier with other geos.
the red heads should be alright byhimself if you wanted it to be.

I know it is a different type of geo with a different type of personality but I had a G. Brasiliensis once and she was very happy on her own. In fact she would have been at her happiest to have had the whole tank to herself!

i personally would say its fine, i was going to do it but then i couldn't help myself and did a 90g geo tank, which i over did so i will be upgrading in the future.
