can anyone positively ID the geo's that snook21 has up for auction on aquabid as true geophagus pellegrini??(yellowhead eartheater)

does anyone have any pics of juvaniles??

thanks :)

They don't look like it. Plus if they are wild, they aren't pellegrini. They come from the western part of Colombia, an area that isn't commerically collected. Look like stieny's to me.

I sent him an email asking if he could send me better pics or if he could look for one particular trait for me and he never returned my email.

If they have an orange spot at the corner of their mouth then they are Steindachneri. Or if they have visible humps @ 2-3" since steinys are a medium growing humphead while Pellegrini grow much larger.

What has me puzzled is the fact they are listed as wild caught Guyana, but none of the three red hump species comes from Guyana.

maybe it's where they were exported from and snookn just copy and pasted it. I believe there are a few companies(exporters) there.

this part was pulleing to me also (Guyana)i have only seen true pellegrini once in the last 15 years...they look like Steindachneri to me as well....thanks for your input guys

I ordered four from snookn21. I believe them to be G. pellegrini. I have looked at some pics of both on the internet and I think they look more like G. pellegrini than G. steindachneri. Tell me what to look for and I'll give it a go. I like Geos and plan to keep more but I am not an expert. I am also trying to get a clear pic but between them moving, the flash, and my dirty glass on my qt tank I have been unsuccessful. This is the best pic I have gotten so far.

Oh, I am sure snookn got them in as listed, I just have major doubts that the collector/exporter has them labeled right. There is an exporter in Guyana, but they don't send out much. Especially compared to the exporters active in Colombia. I know some people are exporting Brazilian species through Colombia since it's illegal to export from Brazil (as well as illegal to sneak them across the border to export via Colombia) ... but in this case, in a country where they are collected, and have many more exporters ... it wouldn't make much sense.

Ullopincrate - From your pic at least (which isn't a close up of course), they appear to be stieny's. Too much blue to be crassilabris. Below is a pic of crassilabris from google, the species we get most of the time when pellegrini is ordered:

I can't post a good picture of pellegrini, since they haven't been since in the US in over 30+ years. And even in Europe, they are really rare. Basically they are supposed to look like crassilabris but with much less irridescence, more vertical length of the bars, and much more red, ie no blue coloration at all.

I have a terrible time taking pics. I also don't see the pic you posted. I'll keep an eye on the little guys. I'm sure in a little while it will become more clear. I'm cool with whatever they turn out to be. I have kept jurupari a few times and wanted to mess with some other earth eaters. Is the pellegrini endangered? Why is it so elusive if not?
