So i just got these guys...they were kind of expensive IMO. $60 for four of them. im unsure what they were labeled as but i know theyre a geo.

theyre in a 20 gallon quarantine tank for now.

these little guys are soo cool! theyre about 2 inches and one has a deformed eye (darnit!!). im hoping the werent inbred, and that these arent siblings. they do all change many different colors and they do it quickly before my eyes. im hoping to get a good pair out of them.

theyre are a couple of different classifications ive found on them but am stuck on which to believe. my guess would be geophagus surinamensis??

nice finnage and colors here

at first they werent too happy about being where they were. i had just a little bit of gravel in there at first. minutes before taking the pics (about 5 hours later) i added about 2 liters of white sand, soon after they seemed to have lost the timid and shy behavior.

this is all they do ...its neat to watch them stroll along with the group, sifting for food in the substrate mix.

leme know watcha think. thanks for the replies

Honestly at 2" your are going to have a REALLY hard time getting a positive id and it be accurate IMO. Surinamensis are extremely rare and you can only get your hands on them from breeders in Germany and would have cost considerably more than what you paid.

Lets see some pics after they are out of QT and have put on a little size. Geo's go through changes in colors, shapes that can be misleading at early ages, positive id's come from good collection data, or from subadult/adult pics & good collection data. Even if it is an altifrons like bomber suggested there are many varients of altifrons. The differences between goes can be very small, especially as juvies. :D g/l

hey good reply, thank you. yes im sarting to realize that there are several look alikes. also some people just say its hard to understand the make up of the group and how many different species there actualy are. ill keep them in quarantine for a few months, then theyll be going into a 55 with bottom feeders. id like to add more because i love the way they stick together "graze" along on the bottom.

They look like juvi G. altifrons but really they are too small to be conclusive. For a positive ID post pics once they get in the 4-5" range.
