My LFS has Jurupari and Altifrons currently. I have done some online research to learn size and attitude. I would like to add some of both to the 220g that already houses 3 male Redheads. Would there be a risk of a female Altifrons hybridizing with the Redheads?

Yes, altifrons and Tapajos will hybridize. Altifrons are large, boisterous fish so be prepared for that.

jurupari are Satanoperca, and most sold that way are probably in actuality S. leucosticta.

Is the difference between S. Jurupari and S. Leucosticta visible in juveniles? After doing an image search I think the S. leucosticta would be preferable.

S. leucosticta has a line of iridescent spots along the back just at the base of the dorsal fin. I’m not sure how old they have to be for it to show, but it will definitely fade if they’re stressed.

Thanks, I will stop by the lfs on the way home to see if I can get a positive id.

It’s hard to tell with the juvies, especially washed out like that. Honestly both species are usually fairly nice. They should both get facial spangling/spotting if they are either jurupari or leucosticta. If you’re interested in Satanoperca these would be a good introduction to the genus. They are much less sensitive to water parameters than the non-spangled ones from blackwater habitats (daemon, lilith, etc.).
