Hmm. The bigger one looks identical to a 4" steinie female I have staring at me out of a tank 2 feet from the computer.
The smaller one has the colouring of a female and the body shape of a female, all plump and round, yet the hump coming of a male. Could be a slightly "humpy" female.
Is there any red at the corners of the mouth ? Smaller males tend to have that. like this ....
Wow, I'm surprised. I could have sworn that the fish on the right was a female. I'm no expert but have spawned the species twice and currently still keep some.
THe M/F differences as I see it are that the males tend to be more colourful, with patches of shiny blue/green. THey often have red at the corners of their mouths. Their facial profile is much less rounded than the females with males having that long straight slope down from their hump to the mouth. THeir humps also tend to be larger and redder than the females.
the two in the last picture spawned today!!!! their mating ritual started this morning and by mid afternoon i spotted the female dropping four eggs at a time and the male fertilzing them. hopefully this spawn will be more successful
